Lake Weir
Lake Weir

Lake Weir: (Approx. 9600 acres) Located in Marion County, midway between Lady Lake, and Belleview, a circular lake 4 miles in diameter, with an extended arm sector connecting it to Little Lake Weir (1000 acres) via a 1 mile canal. Lake Weir’s bottom is comprised mainly of a hardpan, sandy loam strata. Spring fed pure clean waters, and white sandy beaches, make it one of the finest recreational lakes in Florida.

The average depth is 10-12 feet, with a scattering of bottom type eel, shrimp, and pepper grasses. Emergent aquatic species are cattails, bull rushes, and maiden cane (Kissimmee grass), with lily pad groups found in the extended arm sector and Little Lake Weir.

Lake Weir is locally famous for its mid-lake, man-made, brush pile formations. Tournament fisherman used this technique back in the 1970’s and 80’s, to attract and hold Bass in open, deeper waters. The practice has since been deemed illegal by State Law. Brush piles were classified as submerged obstructions, a deterrent to navigation. The State of Florida has since installed “Fish Attractors” on the lake, marked with buoys, to afford fishermen deeper, open water brush piles to catch fish over.

PUBLIC ACCESS: Carney Island Conservation & Recreation Area (Carney Island Park) is located on the western shores of main Lake Weir. It is a gated facility ($5 entry fee), affording swimming, hiking, picnicking, fishing, and boating. The boat launch has 3, double-wide concrete ramps with floating docks. The parking area is paved, with a Rec. building w/ restrooms adjacent to ramp area. Operating hours are normally 7AM to dusk.

NOTE#1: Limited launch access during low lake-level periods. TRAILER AXLES WILL DROP OFF END OF PAVED RAMP.

NOTE#2: No access to Little Lake Weir during low lake-level periods… connecting canal TOO SHALLOW or DRY.
